Neighborhood Associations - Town Council Summits

I initiated the Neighborhood Town Council Summits in early 1992 to build our agenda in Tiburon from the ground up rather than from the top down. (Marin IJ article 10/30/92).  At the time, numerous conflicts were costing the town money, and many of these issues could have been mitigated or avoided if the Town had been aware of them sooner.

A robust neighborhood organization is one of the critical pillars of a strong community. These organizations act as a "super mini government," providing guidelines so residents know how to handle certain situations, collaborate with their neighbors, address common issues, and, ideally, enjoy social activities together.Maintaining strong and active neighborhood organizations greatly benefits the town of Tiburon.

By meeting with these organizations regularly, as I did, you can anticipate and address issues early on, preventing them from escalating into major problems. These summits, which I held at least once a year, focused primarily on sharing neighborhood experiences and best practices, enabling communities to learn from one another.

Each summit would conclude with a special focus session featuring an expert on a topic of current interest.I strongly encouraged the Town Council to continue these summits after I left the council 12 years later. Unfortunately, only one or two were held subsequently.

As a result, many neighborhood associations have weakened or disappeared entirely, creating a vacuum of organization and leading to dysfunction.

As outlined in the Tiburon Together section, I am committed to re-establishing these Neighborhood Summits and revitalizing our neighborhood organizations.
