Supporting Downtown Businesses

I am a strong advocate for our downtown businesses and a firm believer in the importance of resident-serving establishments.

To ensure these businesses thrive, it's crucial that we, as residents, actively support them.

The economic reality of Tiburon's downtown economy is unique. While we have one of the highest per capita and household incomes in the United States, we simply don't have enough people frequenting our local businesses to keep them all alive.

If we want a vibrant downtown with a good selection and variety, we need to make a concerted effort to shop at the stores and eat at the restaurants we love. I am committed to doing my part by supporting local businesses and directing tax dollars toward promoting Tiburon.

But ultimately, it's the residents who can make the biggest difference. In the past, I've challenged everyone to do all their Christmas shopping in Tiburon. I made it a point to buy all my gifts locally, and occasionally, I would share a letter in the Ark about the wonderful items I found in our town. With my extensive experience as a small-town mayor, I've seen firsthand the impact of online shopping on local merchants.

That’s why I make it a personal policy to avoid buying online unless absolutely necessary.

Online retail shopping has had a devastating effect on small-town businesses, so I encourage everyone to remember this the next time they consider clicking "add to cart."

Let's make a commitment to support our downtown, keep our community thriving, and ensure our local businesses succeed.
